If you’re constantly queasy and throwing up half of everything you eat, sour and citrusy lemons are probably the last thing you’d want to reach for. But during pregnancy, morning sickness can become unbearable, and believe it or not, lemonade just might be just what you need to feel better.

It sounds crazy, but it’s true! Many women with morning sickness who swear they can’t keep anything else down report that lemonade somehow has the ability to calm their nausea and make them feel better in a hurry. Maybe it’s the tart, refreshing taste of the lemonade that soothes their stomachs; maybe it’s the aromatherapeutic properties of lemon, which can make you feel relaxed and less depressed. If sipping on lemonade does the trick for your morning sickness, you probably won’t care why it works, only that it works!

Besides helping keep morning sickness in check, lemonade is really good for you, too. It contains vitamin C, which strengthens your immune system, reduces bloating and gas, and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Plus, it’s mostly water, which—duh—you need a lot of anyway.

If cold lemonade doesn’t sound appetizing to you right now (and if it doesn’t, we won’t argue!), try squeezing a lemon into some hot water or some weak tea to get the same benefits. You can even try dabbing some lemon essential oil on your pulse points. Just be sure that however you get your daily dose of lemon, you don’t make it too sour or acidic. If it doesn’t stay down, you could be very sorry.
